1 Forester (Timber Sale Administrator), GS-460-5/7//9 
Mendocino National Forest, Willows, CA

This position would be hired under one of two authorities.  The first is the non-competitive Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) authority, which requires that the students be enrolled at least part-time in an accredited program leading to the qualifications for a forester.  Required is a degree in forestry or a related subject-matter field that includes a total of 30 semester hour in any combination of biological, physical or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work is in forestry, and a grade point average of 3.0 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or relevant experience in forest management.   The student would be working during the summer field season and attending classes during the school year.  Opportunities to work winter and spring breaks may also exist.

The second authority would be under the non-competitive Career Intern Program (2 year intern/training, after which the government may convert to career or career conditional status), and requires a degree in forestry.

This position will be duty stationed in either Upper Lake, CA or in Elk Creek, CA based on the preference of the applicant

This district level position will emphasize timber sale administration experience.  On-the-job training includes field inspections and control of operations such as falling, skidding and yarding, loading and hauling.  The Intern determines whether utilization, slash disposal, erosion control, and fire requirements are adequate.  All findings are documented for the sale record.  The Intern takes appropriate action to correct deficiencies, and assesses penalties when needed.  Intern insures that stream courses and other land features are protected.  The intern will be working under a formal training.  Under the training plan, the employee will be exposed to all other district functions and introduced to Supervisors, Regional and Washington Offices roles in National Forest management.
