(GS-0460-14)
Duty Station: Arlington, VA

The Forest Service’s Bioenergy and Biobased Products Research Program is developing the science and technology to sustainably produce feedstocks and significant amounts of biofuels and biobased products from forest resources. Our work spans the range of developing sustainable management and harvest/recovery systems for alternative resources, improving conversion and biorefinery technologies for cost, energy, and environmental efficiencies, developing innovative uses for wood and wood components, and improving the cost competitiveness of wood for energy. The Program integrates all aspects of sustainable production and management, harvest and delivery, and conversion and utilization research, and spans the scale from molecular to global analysis.

Forest Service Research & Development will soon be advertising a position to provide national forest biomass policy leadership to the Bioenergy and Biobased Products Research Program. The salary range for the position is $93,822 to $121,967 (GS-14). This position is your opportunity to join the deeply committed, highly motivated team providing national leadership to forest energy and forest bioproducts research with the goal of ensuring productive, sustainable, efficient, and affordable forest-based systems and options. Your ideas and recommendations will directly influence and improve the way this research is used to formulate and implement policies and decisions nationally and globally.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skill in helping to plan, conduct, and review bioenergy and biobased products research. A background in forest operations, forest biomass, or forest biomass markets, including consideration of international trade and globalization would be particularly desirable. A strong academic background in any of these areas of specialty is required. Coursework in economics and statistics, and related quantitative sciences will be considered favorably. An advanced degree is a positive evaluation factor. So is evidence of recent training to keep analytical skills fresh. Work experience that demonstrates a progression of responsibilities from local to regional or national levels, with evidence of effective participation in and leadership of teams, provides the necessary foundation for success in this position.
